large backup file all of a sudden

Scotty,

While I realize this is extremely general and vague, we have a macbook in the office that is routinely freezing up on us. When this happens, the only way to revive is by performing a hard reset. Hard drive is only about half full and computer as 1GB of ram installed which should be sufficient for the general office duties being performed.

Let me know if you have any thoughts or feel free to give me a call if you have a moment.

Thank you,

Yes, it is vague. The first thing I would check is the health of the hard drive. If you go to disk utility and select the disk in the left hand column you’ll see a “SMART” status in the lower portion of the screen. If it shows as “failing” then it’s the hard drive.

You can boot from an OSX install disk and launch disk utility from there then choose to “repair disk”. If the drive reports an error (in red lettering) then it’s your hard drive.

If it’s not the drive, then it’s most likely software related. A great way to toubleshoot software issues is to try the problem in another user. If it does not occur in the second user then it’s not hardware. It’s a user related problem. If it does occur then it could be the operating system itself and an Archive and install may be in order.

There are many factors and troubleshooting computer problems, or automobiles, or anything you have to fix, is an art form. Hard to make a blanket statement on what it would be.
